This invention relates to a deployable and rigid composite material intended for use in space. By using shape memory polymers and arranging rigid plates in a specific pattern, a structure that allows folding and deployment is provided. This can enhance safety and efficiency in space missions.
Conventional deployable structures are lightweight and excellent in compactness, but have limitations in load-bearing capacity and durability. Especially for use in outer space, protection from micro-meteoroids and radiation is required, making it difficult to meet these demands. Additionally, conventional materials could not ensure sufficient rigidity upon deployment, affecting the safety and efficiency of missions.
By using shape memory polymer composites and arranging rigid plates within the polymer layer to form hinges, a structure that allows folding and deployment is realized. This improves load-bearing capacity and durability, providing a structure suitable for use in outer space.
